The womens 100 metres at the 2023 World Athletics Championships was held at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest on 20 and 21 August 2023. For an athlete who only just made it into the womens 100m final qualifying from one of the non-automatic spots ShaCarri Richardson showed up in style to take gold in the final in a time of 10.65 seconds. Richardson who had only just qualified for the final after finishing third in her semi-final ran a superb race from lane nine to take the title ahead of Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith. Miller-Uibo finished down in eighth after a disappointing race by the defending champion.
Richardson's victory was a major upset as she had not been considered one of the favorites for the gold medal. However she ran a brilliant race and was able to hold off the challenge of Fraser-Pryce and Asher-Smith. This is Richardson's first major global title and it will be interesting to see how she performs in the future.
Fraser-Pryce who is a five-time world champion and two-time Olympic champion was hoping to add to her medal collection but she was unable to match Richardson's speed. She finished in second place in a time of 10.70 seconds. Asher-Smith who is the reigning European champion finished in third place in a time of 10.83 seconds.
