Arsenal's Pursuit of Riccardo Calafiori Hits Snag
Former Club Basel Could Thwart Arsenal's Plans
Basel's Sell-On Clause Complicates Deal
Arsenal's pursuit of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori has encountered a potential obstacle in the form of his former club, Basel. The Gunners have reportedly agreed a fee of €45 million with Bologna, Calafiori's current club, but Bologna is also in negotiations with Basel regarding the 50% sell-on clause they hold on the player.
Basel sold Calafiori to Bologna last year for a fee of €4 million, but the Swiss club is reportedly reluctant to reduce their sell-on clause. This means that if Bologna were to sell Calafiori for €50 million, Basel would be entitled to receive around €25 million of the transfer fee, which would significantly impact Bologna's profit from the deal.
Arsenal are now reportedly in talks with Basel over a fee, with Bologna said to be requesting around €50 million. However, it remains to be seen whether the two clubs can reach an agreement that satisfies both parties. If Basel insists on their full sell-on clause, it could potentially derail Arsenal's pursuit of Calafiori.
Calafiori has only been with Bologna for one season, but he has impressed with his performances in Serie A. The 20-year-old left-back has made 25 appearances for Bologna and has established himself as one of the most promising young defenders in Italy. He has also been capped at youth level for Italy.
Arsenal are keen to add Calafiori to their squad as they look to strengthen their defense. The Gunners have already signed left-back Nuno Tavares from Benfica, but Calafiori would provide competition for the Portuguese defender and add depth to Arsenal's backline. However, Basel's potential involvement in the deal could complicate matters and make it difficult for Arsenal to complete the transfer.
