Early Life and Accession to Power
Kim Jong-un, born between 1982 and 1984, is the third-generation leader of North Korea. He succeeded his father, Kim Jong-il, as Supreme Leader in 2011. Little is known about Kim's early life, but he is believed to have been educated in Switzerland before returning to North Korea in 2001.
Diplomatic Breakthroughs and Nuclear Diplomacy
Under Kim's leadership, North Korea has pursued a more assertive foreign policy. In 2018, Kim met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the Panmunjom border, marking the first time a North Korean leader had crossed into South Korea.
